Cockroaches can spread a range of diseases. However, unlike mosquitoes, they are not direct vectors of diseases through mechanical transfer and acting as a reservoir. Transmission occurs indirectly, from consumption or contact with items which have been contaminated by cockroaches, rather than through bites.
Cockroaches are not usually the most important cause of a disease, but like houseflies, they play a supplementary role in the spread of some diseases.
Cockroaches are proven or suspected carriers of the organisms that cause the following infections:
Cockroaches can also trigger asthma and other allergies as well as spread E.coli, staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus.
Just like rodents like rats and mice, cockroaches are known to transmit the Salmonella bacteria which can cause salmonellosis, a disease in humans with symptoms similar to food poisoning.
It is believed that cockroaches accumulate the bacteria by feeding on contaminated food. The salmonella remains in their digestive system for a month or more and is deposited through their vomit and feces.
Human symptoms, which typically show 12 to 72 hours after infection, include diarrhea, fever, and vomiting, to name just a few. Recovery usually occurs after four to seven days, with little to no medical treatment need, besides replenishing fluids.
In areas with high moisture, cockroaches will produce dark, irregular shaped smear marks as they crawl along walls or even when they rest. You may see these marks on horizontal surfaces and at wall-floor junctions where cockroaches are most active.
